Join master stonemason Thea Alvin to learn to make arches and other structural elements.  Practice yoga daily and other movement/meditation practices with Abbi Jaffe.  Delight in the beautiful location where Thea has already installed two works of functional living art with local resources (see the bottom two rows of photos below).  Bring your curiosity, desire to learn, sunscreen, and your questions for current or future projects.

Working with stone requires a few things of you, the builder. Stone masonry sculpture is an additive process, by which we assemble small pieces, following a pattern, into a much larger form, sometimes creating arches, circles and openings. You must bring to this process your willingness to learn to visualize in three dimensions, to work physically very hard, and to maintain both your joy and focus while learning new technique and personalities. This workshop will introduce you to some basic stone masonry skills and expand upon your design strengths to bring out of a pile of random stones a striking sculpture composed of many parts, now joined as one. we will explore the golden matrix to solve the math problem: what is an arch, and exactly what is 2/3(1/2x)?

Thea Alvin is a sculptor, professional stone mason, and instructor at Yestermorrow.  She has been digging in the earth and creating beauty from an early age and has a natural talent for sharing her passion and skills.  She has traveled the world leaving works of stone art behind and has visited Ghesc, Italy many times to restore 15th century stone structures while teaching her students to "learn the art of stone and what it is that really connects [them] to vitality and life."   She has even been known to lead seminars of executives in the intricate skill of building a stone arch (the lesson: out of hard work comes balance and harmony).
